Shetal Amin,M.D.

Welcome!  I am a double-board-certified adult and child psychiatrist in practice since 2012.  My specialty lies in the evaluation and pharmacologic treatment of mood disorders, anxiety spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders, and developmental disorders. I have given lectures and presentations on both local and national levels and I continue to be passionate about educating the community about mental health disorders and treatments in an effort to reduce stigma associated with seeking mental health care.

My interest in human connection has been a driving force in my life, leading me to pursue a career in mental health. From a young age, I was fascinated by the complexity of human emotions, behaviors, and relationships. I wanted to understand how we navigate our inner worlds and connect with others in meaningful ways. This curiosity, combined with a strong desire to help people, steered me towards psychiatry, where I could make a tangible difference in people's lives by offering support, understanding, and healing.

I completed my undergraduate studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and went on to earn my M.D. from the St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies.  I subsequently completed my residency in adult psychiatry at The University of Illinois at Chicago where I served as their chief resident during my final year. During my residency, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with children and adolescents both in the general population and in foster care. Providing compassionate care and psychoeducation to this vulnerable population and their families was immensely gratifying.  The exposure ultimately solidified my desire to develop special competency to work with the pediatric population. In 2012 I completed a fellowship in Adolescent and Child Psychiatry at The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  As arguably the most diverse city in the United States, training in Houston further cultivated cultural sensitivity to the Bayou City’s staggering variety of people. In no small part, this experience solidified my desire to stay in Houston and serve the communities I came to love.

I enjoy working with women and addressing the unique psychological, hormonal, and social factors that impact a woman’s well-being. This includes support for mood and anxiety disorders, perinatal and postpartum mental health, trauma, and life transitions; all with a compassionate and tailored approach.

My clinical experience includes over 11 years at Legacy Community Health - a federally qualified healthcare center that serves many of Houston’s underserved communities. I also serve as the Assistant Program Training Director (APD) for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at The Baylor College of Medicine. My primary role as APD is curating and spearheading the fellowship’s didactics and educational curriculum. I genuinely love teaching and supervising Baylor’s child psychiatry fellows at Legacy.

I also am an artist working in various visual media (e.g. resin, jewel/bead art, card making) and incorporate elements of creativity with my patients, peers, and trainees when appropriate. I believe that creativity can provide anyone with the means of self-expression; Art can assist in the discovery of talent and in the exploration of the depths of imagination. Art is also a wonderful way for an individual to effectively communicate their innermost feelings via non-verbal platforms.
