Initial Psychiatric Consultation:
The initial outpatient psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted to understand an individual’s mental health concerns. It typically involves a detailed discussion of the patient’s symptoms, personal and family medical history, as well as social or environmental factors impacting their well-being. The evaluation may also include standardized questionnaires, diagnostic tools, and input from caregivers or family members when appropriate. The goal is to identify underlying issues, provide a diagnosis if applicable, and develop a tailored treatment plan, which could include therapy, medication, or lifestyle adjustments.
Evaluation of Children and Adolescents (ages 3-17)
The initial assessment typically consists of two sessions of 60 minutes each.
Session 1: The initial session is for the parent(s)/guardian(s) to obtain all information regarding the present concerns in addition to the complete medical, psychiatric, developmental, educational, and social history of the minor. This appointment will allow for an honest and open discussion of the issues the child is facing.
Session 2: The second session is for the child or adolescent. If the minor is not comfortable being interviewed alone, the parent or guardian may be present. Diagnostic impressions and treatment plan will be discussed at the end of the the second session.
Evaluation of Adults (18+)
The initial assessment is typically completed in one, 60 minute session.
For any patient, if the case is complicated or requires more time, an additional session may be warranted.
